Daoism (or more commonly, Taoism) Values

- Thought it pointless to waste time and energy on problems that refused a solution, but instead focused on reflection of themselves and introspection.
- Wanted to understand the natural principles that governed the world and necessary character of the world and nature so people can live in harmony with them
- Founder was a sage (wise man), Laozi
- Important books of Daoism is the Daodejing and the Zhuangzi
- "Dao" means the way of nature, "ism" means the act or practice of
- A moral virtue was the wuwei, the disengagement of worldly affairs, and to live in simple, unpompous, and harmoniously with nature.
- Believed that the less the government the better, self sufficient, self knowledge.
- Belief in the Yin and Yang
Legalism Values

- Legalists did not care for ethics, morality, or propriety (ownership), or humans in nature
- Focused on the state, wanted to strengthened it and the foundations were of agriculture and army
- Came from men of Chine Political affairs, most important are Shang Yang and Han Feizi
- Instead of self interest, had faith in state interest with strict laws and even stricter/harsher punishments for law breakers (even the minor ones)
- Brought unification to China
